My symbol for the word “or” is known as the ulmatus – a term derived from the word “ultimatum”. I arrived at the form of the symbol by making a sort of "reversed" vertical ligature of the Esperanto word for “or”, “aŭ”.The symbol was developed with two intents in mind – to visually point towards the two choices between which the ulmatus would rest, and to be a symbol that could bear similar visual weight to its older brother, the ampersand.
The sans-serif version of the ulmatus is based on the Helvetica typeface.
The serif version of the ulmatus is based on the Times New Roman typeface.
